Guidelines for Selecting a Practice Opportunity

PERSONAL CONSIDERATIONS

The selection of a place to live should consider the needs and wants of the entire family and be balanced with the professional considerations discussed in the next section. The issues below are presented to stimulate thought and discussion about what would be ideal and what would be acceptable from a personal perspective.
- How close or how far away from extended family do you wish to be?
- What type of life-style do you wish to lead (active night life, family-oriented activities, etc.)?
- What size community and how far from a metropolitan area would you be willing to live?
- Become familiar with economic indicators of community economic health (unemployment statistics, poverty rates) so you can evaluate a community's economic health.
- What type of topography and climate are acceptable to you?
- What cultural and recreational resources are desirable in/near your community?
- Do you have any special hobbies or interests that restrict you geographically in your search?
- What types of housing/housing prices do you prefer and are they available where you’re looking?
- Are special schools or higher educational institutions important for family members?
- Are places of worship to meet your family's needs available in the locations you are considering?
- Are employment opportunities available to your spouse?
- Are there any particular areas of the country you have a special preference for because of having spent time there previously?
